A Big Question

In years long gone, literature stemmed and gained grounds in the society, becoming priceless treasures. To date, we still read works of famous authors like William Shakespeare, Emily Brontë, Jane Austen, Ernest Hemingway and so many other brilliant authors.

Literature has become a part and parcel of life, a means through which we seek entertainment, knowledge and a means by which we often seek an escape from life's troubles. Writers have taken the art of writing to whole new levels and books have been adapted into movies for better entertainment.

But, above all celebrated genres of literature, poetry seems to be of less importance in the society, judging from the low rate at which poetry books are being read. When book lovers walk into a bookstore, they are often out in search of prose works or drama books to purchase and it is rare for these book lovers to grab a poetry book off the shelf for purchase.

The big question is, why does poetry thrive poorly compared to other literary genres and what can be done to promote the growth of poetry in the society? Please, share your candid thoughts.
